Contemporary Practice Insights w/ Liam Jefferson
Episode 104: Conceptual offense through CLA; Example practice plans
Episode 104 featuring Liam Jefferson is now available. Jefferson was on earlier this year to talk about his role with the London Lions Youth Academy and installing a conceptual offense. It quickly became one of our most popular episodes.
A lot has changed since that time. Jefferson is now the head coach of the Oaklands Wolves and clinician for Transforming Basketball.
It was fun catching up with Jefferson, and as always in our interactions, I learned a lot.
Here’s a quick clip where Jefferson shares how they provide players a Menu of Opportunity during skills sessions. Jefferson describes how you can apply this when introducing the Nash Dribble.
There’s a lot more great insights in this episode. Hope you enjoy!
Some Practice Resources
Since we are talking practice structure and planning. I’m sharing a few resources that you might find helpful.
First, I watched Ohio State coach Jake Diebler’s recent clinic about practice drills on CoachingU+ this weekend. Diebler identified two elements coaches should think about when engineering their practices.
Develop practices that fit who you are as a coach.
Develop practices based off what’s important to you between the lines.
Diebler identified four areas that guide the Ohio State practices.
Play with urgency
Team above self
Dominate hustle plays
Be our best late (last 2 minutes of the first half; last 4 minutes of a game)
Finally, Here are some older practice plans from some programs that incorporate a conceptual offense and use a CLA approach. They include Alex Sarama, Ty Keck, and myself.
